The Perfect Career Is a Trap

The Perfect Career Is a Trap

April 28, 20261 min read

Let’s say the uncomfortable thing first.

The “perfect career” you’re searching for? It doesn’t exist. When I went into teaching, I thought it was the ‘perfect’ career. Until I realised that there was no such thing.

Most career changers stay stuck for months — sometimes years — because they believe there is one right move they haven’t discovered yet. So they research more. Think harder. Wait for clarity to magically appear.

And nothing changes.

Here’s the reality: clarity almost never arrives while you’re sitting still. It shows up when you start moving.

Clarity Follows Action — Not the Other Way Round

You don’t think your way into certainty. You test your way into it.

Every time you:

  • have a conversation

  • try a small project

  • explore a new direction

…you gather data about what fits and what drains you.

Waiting for full certainty before acting is like refusing to leave the driveway until you can see the entire route. It sounds sensible. It keeps you stuck.

Alignment Beats Perfection Every Time

What you’re actually looking for isn’t perfection. You’re looking for alignment.

Perfection is rigid and imaginary. Alignment is practical and discoverable. It asks:

  • Does this use my strengths?

  • Does this energise me more than it depletes me?

  • Does this move my life forward?

That’s enough to take the next step.

Overthinking Is Procrastination Wearing a Smart Outfit

If you’ve been “researching your next move” for months, this may sting — but it matters. At some point, thinking stops being productive and starts being avoidance. Not because you’re lazy. Because your nervous system is trying to keep you safe.

But safe and stuck often look identical.
