The Overlooked Career Model That Might Suit You Better

For years, I thought there were only two respectable ways to build a working life.

You either stayed employed and climbed the ladder… or you left and started a business.

Those were the options everyone talked about. Those were the success stories that got airtime. And if neither quite fit you, it was easy to assume the problem was you.

But here’s what I’ve seen again and again with thoughtful career changers: the most satisfying next chapters often sit quietly in the middle ground.

The False Binary That Keeps People Stuck

Many professionals who feel drained in their current role swing between two uncomfortable thoughts.

On one side: I can’t stay here forever.
On the other: I’m not sure I want the pressure of running a business.

So they hover. Months pass. Sometimes years. Not because they lack capability, but because the options presented to them feel too extreme in either direction. Employment can feel too restrictive. Full entrepreneurship can feel too exposed. What rarely gets discussed enough is that you are allowed to design something more nuanced.

Enter the Portfolio Career

A portfolio career simply means your income and energy aren’t coming from one single source. Instead of one job title carrying the full weight of your identity and security, you create a blend that reflects how you actually want to work and live.

For some people, that might look like part-time employment alongside consultancy work. For others, it could be freelance projects combined with a small emerging business. Sometimes it starts very quietly — a side stream of work that gradually grows more significant as confidence and clarity build.

What makes this model so powerful for career changers is the psychological breathing room it creates. You don’t have to bet everything on one decision. You don’t have to leap before you’ve built any evidence. And crucially, you don’t have to stay frozen while you “figure it all out.”

Why This Approach Works So Well in Real Life

When people are exhausted or burned out, the idea of going straight into full self-employment can feel overwhelming — and frankly, for many, it is.

A portfolio approach allows you to rebuild in a more sustainable way.

You maintain a level of financial stability while you explore. You gather real-world feedback about what energises you and what doesn’t. You start to see where your skills have genuine market value outside your previous role. Over time, patterns emerge. Confidence grows — not because you’ve forced yourself to feel braver, but because you have actual evidence in front of you. That is a far steadier foundation than trying to manufacture certainty in your head.

It’s Not the Right Fit for Everyone — and That Matters

There is one important truth that doesn’t get said enough: even good career models need to match your personality and life reality.

Some people thrive on the simplicity of one focused role. Others come alive when they have variety and autonomy. Some need predictable structure because of family or financial pressures. Others have more flexibility to experiment. The goal is not to follow what looks exciting on someone else’s LinkedIn.

The goal is to build something that your nervous system, your energy levels, and your real life can actually sustain.

If You’re Feeling Pulled in Multiple Directions…

…that may not be confusion.

It may be a sign that a more flexible working model would suit you far better than a single dramatic leap.

You don’t have to force yourself into a box that never quite fit in the first place.

Fit Matters More Than Hype

On the 25th June, I’m running a masterclass designed to shift the way you think about career change.

If you’re waiting to feel confident before making a move, you might be waiting a long time.

This masterclass will help you focus on what really matters — gathering real evidence of your skills, experience, and value — so you can move forward with clarity, not self-doubt.
