CPD

When you transition from teaching to running your own business, it’s easy to assume that professional development is no longer a priority. However, just like in education, staying up to date with new trends, skills and strategies is crucial for long-term success. Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is just as important for entrepreneurs as it is for teachers.

Why CPD Matters for Business Owners

CPD helps business owners stay competitive, develop new skills and grow their businesses effectively. Without ongoing learning, it’s easy to fall behind in areas like marketing, technology, finance and industry-specific developments.

Here’s why CPD should be a key part of your entrepreneurial journey:

1. Keeps Your Skills and Knowledge Up to Date

Industries evolve, and so should you. Whether you’re running a tutoring business, an online course platform, or a coaching service, staying informed about market trends and innovations helps keep your business relevant and competitive.

2. Boosts Confidence and Credibility

The more you learn, the more confident you become in running and promoting your business. CPD also adds credibility—clients and customers are more likely to trust a business owner who is committed to staying knowledgeable in their field.

3. Enhances Business Growth and Adaptability

Through CPD, you can gain insights into business strategies, financial management, and digital marketing—skills that are essential for scaling your business. Being adaptable and open to learning helps you pivot when necessary and seize new opportunities.

You don’t have to spend a fortune to access high-quality CPD. There are plenty of free or low-cost options available. Here are some excellent resources:

Making CPD a Habit

To integrate CPD into your business routine:

  • Dedicate time each week for learning (e.g., one podcast episode, one online lesson, or attending a webinar).

  • Apply what you learn immediately—use new skills in your marketing, pricing, or service offerings.

  • Connect with others in your field to share knowledge and resources.

Final Thoughts

CPD is an investment in both yourself and your business. By continuing to learn and develop your skills, you’ll increase your confidence, credibility and ability to grow a thriving business. With so many free and affordable CPD options available, there’s no reason not to make learning an ongoing priority. This is your opportunity to learn new things and actually be able to implement them straightway.

This isn’t like CPD in schools where you come back into your school, all fired up to implement something into your teaching practice only to hit that metaphorical brick wall and then not be able to do it.

For me, as a teacher transitioner, this has been one of the most liberating elements of entrepreneurship. Knowing what I want my businesses to look like; knowing what services I want to offer and knowing what gaps I have in my knowledge. I have been able to take ownership of these areas and implement my learnings to develop a better suit of offers for my clients, as well as upskilling myself.
